A Free Unicode Word Processor and Database

UDP is a stand-alone document processing program that works with European, Tibetan, Dzongkha and many other languages in the Win/98/ME and Win/NT/2000/XP/Vista/7/10/11 environments. It supports not only word processing and databases in multiple languages, it also supports faxing and "one-click" e-mailing. It can convert a large variety of documents formats to/from Unicode. It is freeware and is available for FREE download. It also works with CrossOver Mac for Mac/OS X and WINE for Unix/Linux.

Instructions

  • Installation and Setup of UDP:
    1. Download UDP  If you have a fast connection and this is your first download, you should choose the complete package.
    2. Run the setup program and follow the instructions on the screen.
    3. If you turn on font smoothing in Windows, it will enhance the appearance of the Tibetan fonts considerably so it is highly recommend.
    4. If you want to install a later version of UDP than you currently have, you can simply run the newly downloaded setup package.
    5. If you didn't download the complete installation package, Download and install the graphics support package for UDP. This is required for inserting and displaying graphics (images) in UDP Documents. After the download completes, run freeimage.exe to install. This package was last updated 28 Sept '05.
    6. If you didn't download the complete installation package, Download the Far East support package for UDP. This is only needed if you will be importing Multi-Byte Character Set files; after the download completes, run ufareast.exe to install. This package was last updated 25 July '05.
    7. If you didn't download the complete installation package, in order to spell check English words, you need to download the English dictionaries; after the download completes, run spelchkr.exe to install. These were last updated 28 Sept '05.

  • The University of Virginia and The Trace Foundation have made the TibetanMachine font sets available for free download (you just need to register - which is free). This font set is the font set that UDP was designed for - you will have the best results if you use it. Click here to Download TibetanMachine fonts. You should download the Tibetan Machine Uni font, TibetanMachine fonts and the TibetanMachineWeb fonts since UDP supports all three. For more information about fonts for UDP, click here.

  • Four fonts that you will also find useful are available for free download from this website. If you didn't download the complete installation package, you can download a self-extracting package for the CSX+ and Tibetan Modern A fonts; after the download completes, run csxplus.exe to install the 3 CSX+ and the Tibetan Modern A fonts.
